Pulsed Laser Deposition
Pulsed Laser Deposition has quickly become a
well-established deposition technique used for novel
material science research. Due to the quick setup
time and rapid deposition rates, PLD has been
referred to as a rapid-prototyping tool for materials
research. Many materials have been successfully
deposited using PLD, including metals and metal
oxides.
Methodology: A focused laser beam is directed upon a small spot on the target to locally ablate the material into an energetic plume. The target manipulator has the ability to both rotate and glide in order to optimize the wear profile. The plume is forward directed, and deposits the vaporized material onto a substrate mounted directly normal to the target.
